Did you know that an average person has more than 65,000 thoughts in a day and you will be rather surprised to know that most of these thoughts are similar to that of yesterday? That is really a lot of thought and each and every thought will lead to an associated change in the mood. Hence, whenever you think something positive, you feel better and when the thoughts are negative, you feel worse. This proves that thinking affects your mental state. Someone said that a man is a product of his thoughts and what he thinks, he becomes.
Our thoughts – What are the things that have an influence?
It is needless to mention that our thoughts can get affected by different types of outside influences like financial situation, job stress, relationship issues and other physical circumstances. Whenever we face hardship, we think it is a hopeless period. This leads to a form of depression and due to this, we keep neglecting things in order to make us feel better, sleep well, eat properly, exercise and even meet family and friends. Not doing the things we love will make us feel worse.
Then what should we do? While it is true that we can’t control our surroundings, we can definitely exercise control on our thoughts. If you thought you don’t have control, you’re wrong. You have got lot more control than what you think or imagine.
What sorts of thoughts can you get?
First, we will discuss about the kinds of thoughts which we can get on a regular basis. The 3 types are:
- Automatic thoughts
- Core beliefs
Automatic thoughts: We keep thinking of many things automatically and constantly throughout the day. They are automatic thoughts and there isn’t any inherent issue with such thoughts.
Assumptions: Assumptions are rules with which we live, they include conditional statements or demand statements. ‘I need to be perfect’ or ‘people should behave properly with each other’ are not always true and restrictive.
Core beliefs: They are strong statements which we make and take as a fact.
It is vital to alter negative thoughts
Depending on the kind of negative thoughts, you will have a chance to turn them into positive ones. You have to manage your demands, handle how you react to catastrophes, you have to practice self-downing and also know about low frustration tolerance.
Having a grip on your thoughts is certainly not easy but it is definitely doable and if you keep practicing consistently, you will start feeling positive.
